Who’s Blogging in America?

StateOfTheMedia.org just released their 2007 report on American Journalism. The report contained some interesting statistics on blogs and blogging. Here are the highlights:

  • About 8% of adult Americans publish a blog
  • The most common reasons people cite for why they blog are “to express yourself creatively” and “to document your personal experiences or share item with others”
  • About 57 million Americans read blogs
  • Of the top 100 blogs in the US, 34% cover technology, 26% are about culture, and 25% are devoted to politics.
  • 8% of bloggers report earning revenue from their blogs. Of those, 68% do so by selling items on their sites, 56% make money by allowing advertising, 29% receive donations from readers and 19% charge for premium content.
  • The blog advertising market is estimated to be between $50-100 million. According to a study conducted by Outsell Inc, blog advertising was expected to grow 43% in 2006.
