What Types of Blogs Are There?

Blogs come in all sizes, shapes, and flavors. Here are 7 types of blogs you might consider starting.

  1. Personal – Personal blogs are generally what people think about when they think of blogs. Personal blogs are online journals that chronicle the life of the blogger and her circle of family and friends. They are often found on MySpace.com or LiveJournal.com.
  2. Internal Corporate – Internal blogs sit behind a company’s firewall so they can’t be accessed by the public. They can offer a communication channel between upper management and employees or team members on a project.
  3. Company – Company blogs provide news and information about what a company is doing or what events they are offering. Be warned: this is not something you should use solely as a corporate brochure, sales pitch, or as a way to distribute press releases. Bloggers will call you on this. Examples of company blogs include the Google Blog, Boeing’s Blog, or Dell’s Blog
  4. Product – A product blog focuses on news about a particular product. Microsoft has a popular blog that’s run by some of the developers on the Xbox team that keeps Xbox fans in the loop about new features to be released and helpful tips on how fans can get the most out of their Xbox.
  5. Group Blogs – Group blogs are blogs run by more than one person. They can be business or personal. Examples of group blogs are BoingBoing.net and Engadget.com
  6. Niche Blogs – Niche blogs focus on news and information about a particular topic, niche or hobby. These can focus on anything from cooking to gadgets to politics to crocheting to popular tv shows. Examples include ChocolateAndZucchini.com, TechCrunch.com, Seth Godin’s Blog, Creating Passionate Users, DailyKos.com and ProBlogger.net.
  7. Brand Blogs – Brand blogs focus on a particular brand such as GM’s Fastlane or dunkindonutstalk.com or theappleblog.com
