The biggest challenge most people have with marketing is that they don’t know where to start. They might know they need to create a free report to give away or produce a series of cds or develop a coaching program, but they might not have all the resources they need to put it together – or they don’t know where to find those resources. Even if they do have those resources, getting started and then actually finishing the product can be a real challenge.
Mitch Meyerson and Michael Port’s Product Factory* offers a highly productive environment for individuals who are truly dedicated to completing a product. When I began Product Factory, I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted to accomplish, but the project – a lengthy ebook – was overwhelming to me. Even as I completed major milestones – 10%, 25%, 50%, 75%, I still felt as if I was only a portion of the way there and still had so much work to complete.

But my Product Factory teammates – and my buddy, especially – cheered me on and supported me throughout the process. They also offered instant feedback so I could assess what was working and what wasn’t with my products. In turn, I offered resources to those who were stuck and needed help with their own products.
We also held Accountability Days where every hour on the hour, we’d call a phone number, say what we did for the last hour and what we planned to do for the upcoming hour, and then would call back in an hour to update each other on our process. Everyone on the call got an amazing amount of work done throughout the day because we each held ourselves and one another accountable.
One of the biggest benefits of the Product Factory environment is the people you meet and the networking you do. Even though Product Factory wrapped up a month ago, I still keep in touch with over half of my former teammates. Many of us now participate in a weekly mastermind group, similar to the team calls we participated in with Product Factory, to continue reaping the benefits of our Product Factory experience.
We’ve set up a Yahoo! Groups account and regularly post feedback, links and resources for one another. We record all our mastermind calls and offer them for members to download. And we’ve created a weekly 20-30 minute podcast, available at PFWinners.com, to promote our expertise and products while helping other solo and small business professionals to market themselves.
My Product Factory experience also sparked my creativity. Now that I’ve produced a body of core content, I’m in the position to leverage that into other products and to other industries. I have numerous products in the works and will soon complete my first post-Product Factory product – in far less time than it took to create the first one! Once you complete one product, producing more is so much easier because you know you can do it, and you know what it takes to get it done.
Is Product Factory for everyone? The short answer is probably not. If you’re looking for a get rich quick scheme that will have you raking in thousands of dollars while doing practically nothing, this isn’t for you. Product Factory won’t help you if you aren’t dedicated to creating, finishing, and marketing a product. Doing that takes a lot of work on your part – but is especially rewarding once you finish.
