Search is Still Strong

Almost 85% of US Internet users have said they seek information through search engines, according to a new report published by the Pew Internet & American Life Project. What that means is that only email ranks more popular as an online activity.

Popular Search Engines

Like similar reports, this survey as of May/June reports that

47% of adults favor Google

26% favor Yahoo

7% favor MSN

5% favor AOL

Google powers AOL, so these stats show why focusing your search engine marketing efforts on Yahoo and Google are so important. The two powerhouses, Google and Yahoo, account for 78% of searches, which is why it is so critical for you to focus on these two search engines for your search engine marketing campaigns.

Search Engines As Indispensable

Another interesting survey asked how indispensable search engines are. Respondents reported that they:

Couldn’t live without Internet search engines: 32%

Like using them, but could go back to other ways of finding information: 50%

Wouldn’t miss them if they could no longer use them: 17%

Don’t know/refused: 1%

Other Interesting Stats

68% of respondents felt they are a fair and unbiased source of information

87% said they find the information they are looking for “most of the time” or “always” when they use a search engine
