An article in Direct Marketing News listed some good tips to break through the information overload (”clutter”) to get through to prospects. These are general enough to be applicable to both product and service marketing.

  • Make clarity your No. 1 objective.
  • Link information with familiar ideas.
  • Inject emotional content.
  • Avoid making counterproductive associations.
  • Avoid interfering messages.
  • Present product benefits at the beginning and end of your message.
  • Present clear benefits of using your product.
  • Decide what you want to say before you say it.
  • Prove your trustworthiness in tangible ways.

The points may sound simplistic, but the clearer you can be in your message, the better prospects will understand you. Confused prospects don’t take action, but if you can present a clear message that meaningfully demonstrates the benefits of using your services, you will differentiate yourself from the crowd.
