Yes, blogs are now almost mainstream according to the Pew Internet & American Life report!
If you’re in the 62% of Americans who don’t know what a blog is, well, you’re reading one now! You might also read one of our old posts, What is a Blog? (short for Weblog).
According to the PEW study, blogging, the art of keeping chronological musings on a fairly regular basis (my definition), has grown significantly in popularity in recent months. The study reports that in 2004, blog readership jumped 58% and that now 27% of internet users read blogs!
And 5% of internet users use RSS aggregators or XML readers to download posts directly. RSS or XML syndication is a great way to get your message out. Readers subscribe directly to your feed, so content is a must. To learn more about the benefits of RSS/ XML, read our old post on Blog Syndication.
As one of those 5%, I know I couldn’t live without my daily blog fix. I use Bloglines, (Update: I’ve since switched to Google Reader) a web based reader, to directly subscribe to almost 150 feeds. All content is then displayed in the same place so I can easily skim through or read the content I choose.
